Stats Tell All

For over 20 years, there has been software available which tallied winners, unforced errors, service percentage, etc. At the same time, many coaches have taken their own notes during matches and collected their own “statistical data.” Tennis fans watching matches on TV have seen computerized stats at the end of sets for most televised matches. Usually this information is compiled through data entry by human “scorers” who determine what is an unforced error and what is a “forced” error.
Their entries are then automatically calculated for TV broadcasters, journalists, etc. In 2006, IBM, who has sponsored the Grand Slams for years, provided players at the U.S. Open with a DVD of each match played including detailed statistical analysis. Perhaps 2007 will mark the year when stats are analyzed as thoroughly as they should be - you’d be amazed what could be learned!
