The Pause That (Hopefully) Refreshes

Comin off a "career year" in 2006, Amelie Mauresmo has had a bit of a bumpy ride so far in 2007. She did not play well Down Under losing early in Sydney and at the Australian Open. Moving back to Europe and the Middle East in February, Mauresmo seemed to be rounding into form as she played pretty well indoors in Paris, won Antwerp and later lost a tight final to Henin in Dubai. However, after taking a scheduled break for a few weeks to prepare for the Sony Ericsson Open
in Key Biscayne, Amelie is now on a month long unplanned break recovering from surgery for appendicitis. Sometimes, a little extra time off leads to even better results when a player rejoins the tour. Following her unscheduled January break as she was separating from her husband, Justine Henin managed to return in top form by winning titles in Dubai and Doha. Mauresmo plans to return for the clay court season leading up to Roland Garros. Amelie, who seems to play better with a few matches under her belt, should have plenty of weeks to get match tough... assuming she recovers as planned and finds her winning form quickly. It should make for an interesting summer Slam season with Serena having won in Australia, Henin and Sharapova swapping places at Number One, Mauresmo on the mend, Kuznetsova on the rise again, Venus coming back... the plot is clearly thickening!
