The global nature of professional tennis can be seen very clearly by the number of past and present global love matches. Many years ago, Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert were engaged and Swedish superstar Bjorn Borg was married to former Romanian player Marina Simonescu. Aussie Lleyton Hewitt was engaged to Belgian Kim Clijsters prior to his marriage to actress Bec Cartwright. Of course, there is the most famous love match of them
all between former tennis greats Andre Agassi and German legend Steffi Graf. Current World Number One, Swiss star Roger Federer has dated former Czech player, Mirka Vavrinec, for over 5 years and Swiss former Number One, Martina Hingis, is engaged to Radek Stepanek from the Czech Republic. There are several other inter-country romances in tour, e.g. Chilean Aussie Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez is dating Argentine Gisela Dulko, Spanaird Carlos Moya and Italian Flavia Penetta. Of course, there are a few players staying "closer to home", i.e. Czech players Lucie Safarova is dating Tomas Berdych as are Russians Maria Kirilenko and Igor Andreev. Name another industry with some many successful "global partnerships"?!
