Luck of The Draw

People often talk about the "luck of the draw" and the recent Pacific Life and Sony Ericsson Opens highlighted some interesting draw scenarios. On the women's side, eventual Sony Ericsson Champion, Serena Williams, actually played the same three players in the round of 16, quarters and semis that she had played (in reverse order) to win the 2007 Australian Open, i.e. Maria Sharapova, Shahar Peer and Nicole Vaidisova. In contrast, Serena played Justine Henin in the
finals of the Sony Ericsson Open for first time in almost 4 years! On the men's side, Roger Federer played and lost to Guillermo Canas in two consecutive tournaments, i.e. Pacific Life and Sony Ericsson Opens! Meanwhile, fast-rising Serb, Novak Djokovic, lost to Rafael Nadal in the finals of The Pacific Life Open and then beat him two weeks later in the quarters of The Sony Ericsson Open. Although the tournament draws may be filled completely randomly, they do sometimes present surprising patterns! In the end, Roger Federer has shown that great champions can win titles despite tough draws. What do you want to bet he beats Guillermo Canas the next time they play?!
