Children are Our Future

For years, the first Wednesday of the French Open has been La Journee des Enfants aka “Kids' Day.” It is a tradition at Roland Garros which speaks to the emphasis that the French Tennis Federation places on encouraging the next generation of children to take up the sport of tennis. Some tournaments on the regular tennis tour, e.g. Porsche Grand Prix on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and ATP Masters Series Hamburg, have created “Kid Clubs” which is another excellent
way to create excitement about tennis amongst the younger generation. When you attend the matches on Kids' Day, you can feel the extra energy in the crowd. The children in the crowd, many of whom may not have attended pro tennis tournaments very often, if ever, cheer so much more enthusiastically than the average tennis fan. One hopes that other Grand Slams consider emulating this tennis tradition.
