Frustrations of French Men

The past couple days at the French Open have illustrated the emotional roller coaster that French tennis fans go through every year at Roland Garros. The men’s side of the French Open equation features two very talented players with flashy games, i.e. Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils. All tennis fans drool over Gasquet’s stunning one-handed backhand, but he has a wonderful all-court game. Gasquet is clearly capable of
winning a Grand Slam title and he has been battling the weight of those expectations for a couple years. Gasquet still hasn’t made the breakthrough in a big event and he played poorly in losing in the second round of the 2007 French Open. Gael Monfils, who captured three of the four Junior Grand Slam titles a couple years ago has also battled the high hopes of the French tennis fans, as well as a few injuries. Monfils has the charisma to really excite the French crowd if he can ever capitalize on his skills and speed around the court. If Gael were to win the title at Roland Garros, he would definitely become “mon fils” aka “my son” to tennis fans across France!
