Reverse on Clay

When you watch Rafael Nadal and some of the other top players who move well on the red clay, you almost start to think that you can’t hit a clean winner.  However, too few players remember to occasionally reverse their opponents.  Against a very fast mover, hitting behind him/her can be a very effective play.  This strategy makes players hesitate slightly before zooming across to the open court the next time around and when they do

reverse, they have a little less power on their shots.  The key is to mix it up because obviously if you reverse too often then the player has plenty of time to set up and hit a winner.  When Rafa hits the red clay of Roland Garros, watch his matches carefully and decide when you would throw in a reverse or two…
