Hawk-Eye "Arrives"

Modern technology has quietly continued to permeate the hallowed ivy walls of The Championships, Wimbledon over the years. In 2007, the Hawk-Eye electronic line-calling system is being used for the first time at Wimbledon on Centre and Number one courts. As a result, large TV screens were installed in both stadiums to show the instant replays when a player challenges
a line call. For reasons that are not entirely apparent, Wimbledon has elected to allow 3 challenges per set compared to the 2 used at the U.S. and Australian Opens. In Davis Cup, unlimited challenges have been allowed. The crowds thus far have seemed to enjoy the new addition to Wimbledon and have even cheered as the results of a challenge appear on the big screen. The Hawk-Eye system is an excellent addition to the sport of tennis, but as you watch the stoic linespeople at Wimbledon, one can help but feel a tinge of sympathy for a linesperson when the instant replay shows he or she missed a call…
