Notes to Remember

Many years ago there was an uproar when Jim Courier pulled out a novel and started to read a few pages during a changeover at the ATP Masters. At the 2007 French Open, there have been several players on the women’s side who have been reading on the changeovers. Serena and Venus Williams have read from notebooks during the changeovers between
games. During the women’s final, Justine Henin started reading a letter from her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, while she was leading 4-1 in the first set. There has been a lot of debate in the tennis world regarding on-court coaching during matches, but this is a better way for a player to remind himself or herself of a few key pointers in the middle of a match. It’s like an open book test in school. You can look at your notes throughout the exam, but you still need to be able to apply the knowledge appropriately.
