Number One Doesn't Always Win

Number One Seed

It has been 11 years since the women’s Number One seed captured the title at the French Open.  In 1996, Steffi Graf won the championship when she was seeded first.  Graf subsequently won again in 1999, but she wasn’t the top seed that year.  In the past 11 years, several former Number One ranked players have won the

French Open title, e.g. Jennifer Capriati, Serena Williams, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Justine Henin.  In addition, Iva Majoli, Anastasia Myskina and Mary Pierce have won the title at Roland Garros.  Given the consistency of the play by the very top players in the women’s game, it is quite surprising that if Justine Henin wins the 2007 French Open title, it will her first as the Number One seed.
