Playing to Form

French Clay

As the quarterfinal match-ups are finalized at the 2007 French Open, 7 of the top 8 women’s seeds made their seedings, but only 4 of the top 8 men.  In contrast at the 2007 Australian Open, only 3 out of the top 8 women’s seeds made the quarters while 5 of the top 8 men made the quarters “Down Under.”  There is so much discussion about the possibility of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer meeting again in the French Open finals, but yet

only four men made the quarters at both the 2007 Australian and French Opens, i.e. Federer, Nadal, Davydenko and Robredo.  On the women’s side, four players also made the quarters at both Melbourne Park and Roland Garros in 2007, i.e. Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Nicole Vaidisova and Anna Chakvetadze.  In terms of the semis and finals, Roger Federer is the only guy on the men’s side who has a chance to reach the Australian and French semis and finals.  However, on the women’s side, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Nicole Vaidisova could all repeat their semifinal finishes from the 2007 Australian Open at the French Open in Paris this week.  These results illustrate the number of players shifting in and out of the top ten in the rankings, especially on the men’s ATP Tour.
