Rain, Rain Go Away

Even with all of our modern technological advances, we have still not yet learned how to control the weather! There is rain at every Grand Slam and the French Open and U.S. Open have been particularly hard hit in the past couple years. Nonetheless, given the typical British weather patterns in late June and early July, rain at Wimbledon is (unfortunately) always an annual
topic conversation. Since 1877, only 32 days of matches, two of them in 2004, have been cancelled because of rain. That may not sound like a lot, but it’s been more than 10 years since there was a completely rain-free Wimbledon, i.e. 1995. What makes it so challenging for players is all the starts and stops and partial match days due to the rain. Grass may feel easier on the body, but when you have to play back-to-back matches over several days because of rain delays, the body still hurts big time! In 2009, there will be a retractable roof over Centre Court which will help, but it’s still only one court…
