The Eventual Winner

If you want to know who will win a Grand Slam title, just check who Lleyton Hewitt lost to in that tournament and you’ll have a pretty good idea. In the past 12 Grand Slams, Hewitt has lost to the eventual champion eight out of twelve tournaments. Hewitt’s experience illustrates how difficult it can be for a former Number One ranked player and Grand Slam champion to make it back to the very top of the game when his/her ranking
slips a little. There are a few former champions floating in the top 20-30 on the ATP rankings including Carlos Moya and Juan-Carlos Ferrero. For players such as these who have reached the semis and finals of Grand Slams, it is quite tough to be playing the top players in the round of 16 or even sometimes earlier… they need to win those matches to move higher in the rankings and avoid even tougher draws the next time around, but it isn’t easy. Hewitt has clearly had some tough draws, but at least he hopefully found some solace in the fact that he lost to the champion.
