Brilliance of Borg

Roger Federer’s thrilling five set win over Rafael Nadal to capture the 2007 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s singles title allowed tennis fans to remember the remarkable achievements of Bjorn Borg. Federer has now matched Borg’s five consecutive Wimbledon titles. However, Borg’s greatest feat may actually not be his five Wimbledon titles or eleven Grand Slam titles, but
rather the fact that he won both the French Open and Wimbledon titles for three consecutive years, i.e. 1978-1980. As the French Open and Wimbledon matches between Federer and Nadal have shown, it is not very easy to win both titles in the same year even once, let alone three years in a row. Over the past year or so, there has been so much discussion about the “greatest tennis player” of all time and many comparisons between Federer and Pete Sampras. Bjorn Borg’s accomplishments definitely merit inclusion in that conversation…
