Celebrity Tennis Players

Forbes magazine recently came out with its "Celebrity 100" list. It is a testament to the continued popularity of the top tennis players that three of them, i.e. Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams made the list again this year. However, there are actually many athletes on the list and Federer's "buddy," Tiger Woods occupies the second slot and earned $100 million in entertainment income in the past year. There are several team sports athletes such as David Beckham, Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez on the list ahead of Federer, as well golfer, Phil Mikkelson. Federer is the top ranked tennis player in the 38th spot with earnings of $29 million including endorsements such as Gillette, Rolex, Nike, Swiss Air and Wilson . Maria Sharapova moved
up a couple notches from last year to 51st place with entertainment income of $23 million including endorsements with Pepsi, Nike, Canon, Colgate-Palmolive and Motorola. Serena Williams is the only other tennis player on the list in the 69th spot with earnings of $14 million including endorsements with Nike, Wilson, McDonald's and Estee Lauder. The "Celebrity 100" list is compiled by factoring in income, Web rank, press rank and TV rank, i.e. the number of mentions, clips, etc. It is interesting to note that the top-listed female golfer on the list, Michelle Wie, had higher income than Serena Williams, i.e. $19 million, but was still ranked behind Serena on the list. Fellow golfer, Annika Sorenstam, was listed 83rd with income of $10 million. Given the global popularity of tennis, it is surprising that so few tennis players have made this Forbes list. Let's see what happens over the next few years...
