(New) Moms on Tour

New mothers are making news again on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour… Recently-retired and newly-married, Kim Clijsters, is pregnant with her first child. Clijsters has stated that she has no plans to return to the Tour. Meanwhile, Lindsay Davenport gave birth to her first child, a son named Jagger, on June 10th, three weeks early, by Caesarean. Baby and mom are doing well! Davenport has said many times over the past several
months that she was retiring from the Tour. However, it seems she’s had a change of heart. Lindsay will be playing doubles in a World Team Tennis match in Newport Beach, California, on Saturday, July 21st and has also committed to play doubles with Lisa Raymond in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event the week of August 17th, one week before the 2007 U.S. Open… hmmnnn… Davenport has recently said that she is mulling a comeback and is interested in competing in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Davenport is excited to experience the Tour as a new mother and her change of heart is not that surprising. It is hard to walk away from a game you’ve played for over 20 years of your life, as well as difficult to replace the buzz of competition. Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon as a mom, but it is not an easy road to travel. There are the physical rigors, as well as the emotional challenges of being a “working mom.” Here’s to hoping that Davenport finds success and happiness while “having it all”…
