Opposite Extremes

Amelie Mauresmo

It was tough watching Amelie Mauresmo lose to the talented Czech player, Nicole Vaidisova, on Tuesday at Wimbledon.  Mauresmo is one of those players whose tennis can be so brilliant at times that when she plays as badly as she played in this match, it can be painful to experience as a tennis fan.  Other top players can have off days, but somehow it is different because their highs and lows are not as dramatic.  Past champions such

as Hana Mandlikova and Henri Leconte were other incredibly talented players who could play very hot and cold on different days.  Mauresmo has had a tough year with injuries and then losing a couple months due to surgery for appendicitis, but you still had the feeling that if she could have struggled through this match she might have found her form and confidence in the later rounds at Wimbledon… hopefully, next time…
