Sania Storms On

Indian tennis player, Sania Mirza, seems to have finally “found her groove” again. Mirza seemed to be rising steadily up the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings a couple years ago when she burst on the Tour and reached 31st in the rankings. However, she had a bit of a sophomore slump last year, struggled with injuries and the weight of press attention and expectations, especially in India. As a result, her ranking slipped. A knee injury took her off the Tour for a couple
months this past winter and she started back slowly during the late May through Wimbledon tournament swing. Now that the summer U.S. hard court season is underway, Sania seems to finally be finding her confidence again. Mirza reached the semis in Cincinnati and was a finalist at Stanford during the first couple events on the 2007 U.S. Open Series, losing both times to Anna Chakvetadze. At Stanford, Mirza also won the doubles title which is a rare feat on the pro Tours these days when so few top players compete in both singles and doubles. The key for Mirza will be to find a way to maintain her strong form through several tournaments. Sania’s aggressive style of play and powerful forehand lend themselves well to the hard courts. Hopefully, Mirza can build on her strong start to the summer season as the 2007 U.S. Open rolls around at the end of August.
