Triple Titles

There has been a lot of discussion at the 2007 Wimbledon regarding the impact of the rain delays on the singles match schedule. However, not only do rain delays push back the singles matches, but they really create a backlog in the doubles and mixed doubles which are always played after singles matches. It’s been 34 years since Billie Jean King was the last player to
win the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon in the same year. As a serve-and-volleyer, playing doubles was good practice for Billie Jean King, but still the scheduling and number of matches required in two weeks to win three titles is a lot of tennis. Serena and Venus Williams had hoped for another Wimbledon Ladies’ Doubles title, but an injury derailed their attempt this year. Considering how few of the current crop of top players, male and female, even play doubles let alone mixed doubles, Billie Jean King’s record may stand forever.
