Dominating Countries at the U.S. Open

As the 2007 U.S. Open draw continues to play out, it is not surprising that the United States has the most men in the singles main draw, i.e. 20, (a combination of wild cards and direct entries) while Russia maintained its lead with 18 women in the singles main draw. Meanwhile, the fact that France has 28 players (15 men and 13 women) in the singles draws demonstrates the popularity of the sport in the country, as well as its strong national development program. In contrast, former powerhouse, Germany may have 19 players in the singles main draws, but really only maybe one, i.e. Tommy Haas, could be considered to have a chance to win the title. Australia, Sweden and the Czech Republic, home to many former tennis legends, i.e. Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg, Mats Wilander, Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova, have very few players in the main draw this year. China, host of the 2008 Olympics, has fewer players in the women’s singles draw than in the past due to injuries to some of its top players and still no men in the main draw. Now where will the 2007 U.S. Open Champions come from?
