Mauresmo MIA

A year ago, Amelie Mauresmo came into the 2006 U.S. Open after having won the Wimbledon and Australian Open titles. This year, Mauresmo will not even be competing at the U.S. Open. It seems Mauresmo came back too quickly after surgery for an appendectomy and struggled with both her confidence and her conditioning at the French Open and Wimbledon. After a few weeks of summer vacation to recharge her emotional and
mental batteries, Mauresmo started training again only to withdraw from the 2007 U.S. Open with a leg muscle injury. Mauresmo has battled injuries throughout her career, but her next comeback may be her most challenging. Given the current crop of players at the top of the women's game, Mauresmo can clearly continue to challenge for Grand Slam titles. However, she will need to stay healthy long enough to play enough matches before the Slams to get match tough while also surviving seven matches in the two weeks of a Grand Slam. The next two years will be Mauresmo's greatest challenge, as well as her best opportunity to capture another Grand Slam title. As Mauresmo said earlier this summer, she needs to create new goals. Let's hope they inspire her for a few more years because she brings so much to the sport of tennis through her thrilling tennis.
