Rapid Rise in the Rankings

Rising Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic, is the first player since Boris Becker in 1994 to beat the top three ranked players in a row to win a tournament, i.e. #3 Andy Roddick, #2 Rafael Nadal and #1 Roger Federer. Djokovic accomplished that rare feat in winning the recent ATP Masters tournament in Montreal. What's even more impressive about Djokovic's recent play may be his rapid rise up the rankings in the past year, i.e.
from around 80th to number 3. Other tennis pros have made sudden fast moves up the rankings, but usually they have accomplished that by reaching a Grand Slam final, e.g. Pam Shriver, Carlos Moya and David Nalbandian. Djokovic has had a career year so far with solid results in both the regular tournaments and Grand Slams, but he has yet to reach a Grand Slam final. In a couple weeks when Novak plays at the 2007 U.S. Open, we'll know whether he really is enjoying one of the greatest "road-trips in sports"...
