Tennis Under the Lights at the U.S. Open

US Open in New York at Night

As the epic five set James Blake and Fabrice Santoro match illustrated last night, there is just something different about nighttime tennis matches at the U.S. Open under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium.  They also play matches at night down under at the Australian Open, but the combination of the vastness of the 23,000+ seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium compared to 15,000+ at Rod Laver Arena, as well as the New York crowd combine to create a unique atmosphere.  It can be electrifying and also very rowdy at times, especially

during very late night matches.  Tennis pros either love the craziness of the atmosphere and the occasionally boisterous fans at the U.S. Open or they feel really uncomfortable under the glare of the nighttime spotlights.  Every top seed is scheduled for at least one nighttime match during the tournament so if you want to win a U.S. Open title, then you need to embrace tennis under the lights in front of the New York fans.  As they say, New York is unlike any other city in the world and nighttime tennis at the U.S. Open is a unique experience for both players and fans.
