U.S. Open (Series) Champions

2006 U.S. Open Champions, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, have both secured first place in the point standings for the 2007 U.S. Open Series primarily as a result of their tournament wins in Cincinnati and San Diego, respectively. Therefore, if they repeat as champions at the 2007 U.S. Open they will earn a $1 million bonus! Ironically, Federer only competed in two U.S. Open Series events, reaching the finals in his first
and winning the second. Meanwhile, Sharapova won her first event and reached the semis in her second before withdrawing with an injury. Other players including Americans, Andy Roddick and James Blake, competed in several U.S. Open series tournaments. However, the point system clearly favors a strong performance in a couple major events over a solid showing in several events.
