Tennis In New York City

The 2007 U.S. Open is underway in “New York.” However, it’s not really in “New York City” aka “Manhattan,” but actually in Flushing Meadows which is in one of the outer boroughs, i.e., Queens. There may be over 30 courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, but in “New York City,” there are actually very few tennis courts given the population and wealth of the city. The burgeoning tennis powerhouse, Serbia, has approximately 60 courts in its capital
city of Belgrade which has approximately 1.5 million people. Several private tennis clubs in Manhattan have closed in the past decade and there are now only about 150 or so courts (outdoor, indoor, public, private) in “New York City.” Given the size and stature of New York, it’s rather surprising that the city of approximately 1.5 million people has so few tennis courts.
