Time for the Trainer

As the 2007 U.S. Open winds down, the players aren’t the only ones who will be looking forward to a few days off.  The tournament trainers have been rather busy during the past couple weeks.  As one watches the players struggle through long, tiring matches, it seems that the calls for the trainer have definitely increased over the past several years.  Clearly, some players seem to utilize the services of the trainer more frequently

than others in long matches.  Since the rules have changed, players can seek treatment from the trainers for “loss of condition,” e.g. cramps.  Therefore, one now frequently sees trainers massaging players’ arms and legs or stretching out their backs while they lay on the court during a changeover.  Sometimes, this treatment from the trainer also simply provides the player with a few minutes of extra rest during the break between games…
