What Surface for Davis Cup?

Davis Cup

This weekend, there are World Group and relegation round Davis Cup matches being played.  As is the custom, the home team selects the court surface.  So the real dilemma then becomes does one choose the best surface for one's home team or the worst surface for the visiting opponents?  For example, Sweden is playing the United States team on a fast indoor carpet and Serbia is playing Australia on a temporary indoor clay

court.  Swedish players such as Jonas Bjorkman, Thomas Johansson and Robin Soderling are stronger on hard courts than clay, but Americans Andy Roddick and James Blake also much prefer fast hard courts.  Meanwhile, Serbian star, Novak Djokovic, plays well on clay, but he's won two titles on hard courts.  Therefore, it was slightly surprising that the Serbs selected a temporary indoor clay court for their tie against the Australian team led by baseliner Lleyton Hewitt.  In the end, choosing one's "best surface" is always a combination of one's favorite surface coupled with the opponent's worst surface.
