Blue is the New Green in Tennis

Blue Tennis Court

For years, green has been associated with tennis.  For example, most tennis balls have been “fluorescent light green” and hard tennis courts have traditionally been dark, forest green.  Now the 2008 Australian Open is following the lead of the ATP Tour and the U.S. Open with blue tennis courts.  When the first Grand Slam of 2008 takes place, the tennis will be played on newly-laid blue tennis courts at Melbourne Park.  One reason

for the color change is that it is often easier for television tennis fans to track the ball against a blue background.  Down under, all of the major tennis tournament sites and training facilities will switch to the new tennis court surface used at the Australian Open.  In fact, as a result of the new blue tennis court color, the entire design of new tennis arenas in Australia and elsewhere may be affected.  For example, the color and design of tennis court backgrounds and seats, which usually complement the color of the tennis courts, may need to be altered.  The rest of the world may be "going green," but the tennis world is all blue sky and beyond!
