Boost for (Beach) Tennis?

For the past couple of years, there have been Beach Tennis tournaments in Europe organized by Tennis Europe and also a professional Beach Tennis circuit in the United States. Last week, the International Tennis Federation announced the launch of a beach tennis circuit in 2008, i.e. the "ITF Beach Tennis Tour." The move is a significant one for the ITF because the Beach Tennis Circuit will join only five other sanctioned ITF circuits, i.e. the ITF Junior Circuit, ITF Men's Circuit, ITF Women's Circuit, ITF Seniors Circuit and NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. The ITF hopes that Beach Tennis will help to enhance the appeal of the sport of tennis to players of all ages and thereby help to grow the sport of
tennis. However, Beach Tennis is rather different from regular tennis. Beach tennis is basically a combination of tennis and beach volleyball. Players compete in doubles teams on a court with a net that looks like a beach volleyball net, the slightly depressurized tennis ball can't bounce and players use either paddle rackets or tennis rackets depending upon the tournament and location. In Europe, the players use paddle rackets and in the U.S. they play with regular tennis rackets! Water-skiing and snow skiing are both forms of skiing, but they don't tend to affect each other in terms of cross-over participation. Soccer, which is very popular globally, is played on both grass fields, as well as often informally on beaches around the world. However, soccer is the exact same game regardless of the surface whereas beach tennis and regular tennis vary in significant ways. Beach tennis certainly will appeal to younger people, but will it have any effect on the popularity of traditional tennis? It seems unlikely.
