From Russian Tennis Players With Love!

The 2007 Kremlin Cup will go down in history as one of those unusual tennis tournaments in which the hometown players came through to capture the title – a rare feat and a tournament director’s dream! Russians, Nikolay Davydenko and Elena Dementieva, won their “home” titles when they both captured the Kremlin Cup tournament on Sunday. For Davydenko, it was a victory amidst the fog of the betting scandal which has haunted
him for the past few months. At the same time, Davydenko has been rumored to be seeking to change his citizenship, e.g. to Austria or Germany, since he spends the majority of his time outside Russia. For Elena Dementieva, the Kremlin Cup title was by virtue of her first-ever upset victory over Serena Williams in the finals. The win for Dementieva also comes after a tough year in which Elena had some injuries and her ranking dropped a bit. With the victory, Dementieva is ranked in the top ten again. When the 2008 Grand Slams roll around, the hometown crowds will be rooting strongly for an Aussie bloke, a Frenchwoman, an Englishman and an American dude, but it will be a major surprise if one of them achieves victory…
