The Art of the (Tennis) Game

Paint Palette

Martina Navratilova, who had an art exhibition called the “Art of the Grand Slam” on display at Roland Garros, talked about the artistry involved in playing tennis.  One usually thinks of tennis as a sport rather than an art form.  However, like other talented superstar athletes such as Michael Jordan, tennis players can often seem almost like ballet dancers at times as they glide around the court, e.g. Roger Federer or the legendary Aussie,

Evonne Goolagong.  The same can be said for well-constructed points in a tennis match.  The most exciting and talented top tennis players are extremely creative in their shot selection almost as if each point was a new canvas on which to construct a work of art.  Watch Federer at his best or the talented Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, and there is a bit of art in everything that they do on a tennis court.
