High Stakes for Tennis Players in Shanghai

Temple China

As the top eight male tennis players gather in Shanghai for the year-end ATP Tennis Masters Cup, there is a lot at stake for the various competitors. So what’s on the line for each tennis player?

Roger Federer – He is clearly the Number One player again this year, but two recent losses to David Nalbandian will make him want to close the year on a high note by winning the title.

Rafael Nadal – Winning the title on hard courts would help to reinforce Nadal’s stature as the second ranked player, especially after his struggles since Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic – He’s had an impressive season so far, but still lacks a major title so a win here would position him strongly for 2008.

Nikolay Davydenko – His strong season has been clouded by bad press regarding betting issues, “lack of effort,” etc. and so it would be a bit of a salve for him to win the title here.

Andy Roddick – His stated year-end goal is winning the Davis Cup title for the U.S., but a singles win here would be a monumental confidence booster for Roddick since it’s been four years since his lone Grand Slam title at the 2003 U.S. Open.

David Ferrer – He’s played excellent tennis this year, but a title here would prove he truly belongs in the top ten.

Fernando Gonzalez – He has not matched his remarkable Australian Open showing so far this year, but a title here would go a long way towards restoring his confidence.

Richard Gasquet – He’s shown that his brilliant tennis can beat anyone on any given day, but now he needs to beat them all in a big tournament… why not here?!
