Recap: ATP Masters Cup Shanghai

Roger Federer

Now that the 2007 ATP Masters Cup Shanghai has finished, we can take a moment to reflect on the performances of the top eight men who competed in the Championships.  What were the surprises and who made an impression likely to last into 2008?

Roger Federer – Federer showed that his confidence was not shaken by his opening match loss to the red-hot, Fernando Gonzalez.  In the end, Federer closed out the year the same way he started it, i.e. with a major tournament title.

Rafael Nadal – Rafa’s play, including his loss to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, reflected his struggles and lack of confidence in the second half of the year.  If he’s healthy, then Nadal will definitely make his mark again during the 2008 season.

Novak Djokovic – His poor play was disappointing, but not surprising given how mentally and physically tired he appeared to be from all the tennis he played in 2007. Djokovic has the game to challenge for a Grand Slam in 2008 and time will tell how he handles the burden of those expectations.

Nikolay Davydenko – It must have been nice to play an entire tournament without a new controversy…

Andy Roddick – His primary year-end goal is to win the Davis Cup for the U.S., but he had to be frustrated, if not disappointed, by his losses to Roger Federer and David Ferrer.  It may be a challenge for Roddick to maintain his place at the very top of the game in 2008…

David Ferrer – He played like a very confident top-tenner throughout the tournament… but can he carry that feeling into and throughout 2008?

Fernando Gonzalez – His play mirrored his performance the past year or so… flashes of brilliance followed by less-inspired tennis.  His results at the 2008 Australian Open, where he has a lot of points to defend, could foreshadow his prospects for the year ahead…

Richard Gasquet – It was an accomplishment for him to reach the ATP Masters Cup, but he’ll need to perform a lot better than he did in Shanghai if he hopes to fulfill his potential in 2008…
