Recap: Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid

Justine Henin

Now that the “tennis season” is officially over for the women, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships.  What did each player accomplish and what did we learn about each player which could impact her 2008 season...

Justine Henin – She closed the best season of her career with her tenth title… not a bad way to go on vacation and then start to prepare for the 2008 Australian Open!

Svetlana Kuznetsova – It was a tournament to forget in the country that is her “second home” and training base… Hopefully, she will remember the rest of her season as she relaxes on her well-earned vacation!

Jelena Jankovic – She seems a victim of her own success for the rest of the year, i.e. clearly exhausted mentally and physically.  She will definitely be rested and back in the hunt in 2008!

Ana Ivanovic – Her performance mirrored her year in a way with some good wins, a surprisingly easy loss to Sharapova and a loss to Henin in the semis.  Focus for 2008 will be coming through in the semis and finals of majors.

Serena Williams – Sadly she had to retire from her first match and then from the tournament.  Her continuing struggles with various injuries does not bode well for the future…

Maria Sharapova – Played (and served) her best of the entire season… hopefully she can carry the positive karma into the 2008 Australian Open.

Anna Chakvetadze – Played solidly which reflected her season as well.

Daniela Hantuchova – Lost a couple tight matches… just the sort of matches she’ll need to win in 2008 to move higher in the rankings.
