What's at Stake in Madrid

Flamenco Madrid

The stakes are different for each of the tennis players in the 2007 Sony Ericsson Championships.  Everyone who qualified has had a very strong year, but the results of this final tennis tournament of the year matter in different ways for each of them.  So what’s at stake for each of the players?

Justine Henin – She’s clearly Number One for 2007 and the win here would cap off an excellent year, but a loss would not seriously dent her stellar season.

Svetlana Kuznetsova – She almost won the 2007 U.S. Open and a win here would be the highlight of her best season since 2004 when she won the U.S. Open title.

Jelena Jankovic – She’s won 4 titles and over 70 matches this year, but she lacks a major title on her resume so this would be a memorable win for her.

Ana Ivanovic – Reaching her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros was significant, but a win here might help propel her to a Grand Slam title in the future.

Serena Williams – Her surprise win at the Australian Open reestablished Serena at the top of the women’s game and a title here would make up for a rough patch due to injuries and poor play since Wimbledon.

Maria Sharapova – A title here would probably mean more to Sharapova than all the other players given her shoulder and serving problems this year.

Anna Chakvetadze – A title here would be a major breakthrough after a very solid “top ten” season.

Daniela Hantuchova – Returning to the top ten after almost five years, a title here would seriously boost her confidence heading into the 2008 Grand Slam season.
