Please Come Back and Play!

Tree

There have been the past couple years and continue to be today… rumors that Monica Seles may attempt another comeback.  Seles has been sidelined the past several years because of foot problems, but in a recent interview she said she was inspired by Lindsay Davenport’s recent comeback.  Seles said she was contemplating playing in a few tournaments in 2008 in preparation for competing at the Grand Slams (but she

wouldn’t be ready for the 2008 Australian Open).  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see Seles playing again, especially if she could perform at a competitive level?  Davenport and the recently-retired, Martina Hingis, are former tennis stars who have returned successfully following extended breaks.  However, Seles has been away from the game a couple more years and it’s not clear if she would be satisfied just competing or if she is coming back to seriously try to win another Grand Slam title.  Her possible comeback speaks volumes about both her love for the game, as well as how hard it is to walk away, especially when your career has been cut short by injuries.  Nonetheless, it is impressive that Seles is training hard enough to consider such a comeback and she would be a wonderful addition to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.  Seles hits such a heavy ball that it’s unlikely that today’s power players would scare her.  If Seles does pursue a comeback, the real challenge for Monica will be finding her consistency and staying injury-free once she is competing again.  It won’t be an easy path, but hopefully she will “walk the walk” if she’s healthy enough because it would be awesome to have her back on Tour again!
