RECAP: Tennis Country 2007 New Year's Predictions

Review

  • 8 different men and women will win Grand Slam titles
  • Electronic line-calling systems will be used at all top tier events by the end of the year
    • Hawk-Eye did seem to be ubiquitous this year and was used at the Grand Slams, Davis Cup, Masters Series, etc
  • The U.S. Open will announce plans for a stadium court roof
    • There were rumors regarding possibly adding a roof to the top of the Louis Armstrong stadium
  • A French player will make a serious run at Roland Garros
    • Oops!  We meant to write Wimbledon… i.e. Marion Bartoli
  • Rafael Nadal will have a better "hard court" record than on clay courts
    • Nadal’s 2007 clay court record was outstanding which makes his strong hard (and grass) court record look less impressive than it really is… bottom line, Nadal can clearly win on all surfaces
  • A female player named "ova" will win a Grand Slam title
    • Well… Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova did lose in the finals of the Australian Open and U.S. Open, respectively…
  • The U.S. will win the Davis Cup
    • The American boys came through this year and it was a very sweet victory for Andy Roddick, James Blake, the Bryan brothers and captain, Patrick McEnroe
  • Another former Grand Slam champion, besides Kim Clijsters, will announce her retirement
    • Martina Hingis called it a (final) day… and it was sad to see her walk away forever under “a cloud of dust” following her announcement that she had tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon, which she denies
  • By the end of the year, a match will be officiated using only an umpire and an electronic line-calling system... no linespeople
    • Tennis has not yet reached the moon or Stanford University where they have designed a car which can drive itself!  But stay tuned...
    • A Chinese male player will crack the top 200
      • Not yet… but the 2008 Beijing Olympic tennis tournament is bound to heighten interest in the sport of tennis in China
    • There will be no American female player in the Top 10
    • Monica Seles will finally officially retire... please say it won't be so...
      • Amazingly, Seles recently stated that she may return to compete again on the tennis Tour (including Grand Slams) in 2008 – awesome!
