
Listed below are the champions for the 2008 Australian Open… it is quite a global distribution of trophies. No American winners this year, even in doubles. Meanwhile, titles were won by players from Russia, part of the former Soviet Union (Ukraine), Eastern Europe (Serbia), Israel and China. It was the first Grand Slam titles for Israel and the Ukraine, as well as another doubles Grand Slam title for China, which also has a Gold Medal in doubles from the 2004 Olympics. Novak Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title and the first singles title by a Serbian. Maria Sharapova won her third Grand Slam title and now only needs a title at Roland Garros to complete a "career Slam.” Nenad Zimonjic, from Serbia, won his second mixed doubles title at the Australian Open. For all of the other players, it was their first Grand Slam title!
