Australian Open Takes on Betting

The 2008 Australian Open has several measures in place as part of a serious effort to avoid any match-fixing scandals. For example, laptops, which are frequently used for online betting, will be banned at courtside. Access to players is being even more restricted this year than in the past. The tournament has established a telephone hotline for people to report suspected betting and match-fixing. In addition, players and
associates who are found guilty of match-fixing will be subject to jail terms. Under the law in Australia, individuals who are found guilty of match-fixing or other corruption could face a jail sentence of up to 15 years. This may sound quite severe to some, but betting on tennis by insiders is fraud and very damaging to the sport. The powers that be in professional tennis are trying their best to avert a blight on the sport of tennis – well done!
