Australian Open Tennis TV

The 2008 Australian Open has embraced technology this year by offering broadband video access to live matches, highlights and interviews. There are geographic embargos so that fans in certain parts of the world, e.g. the US and Europe, can’t access this service. However, many of those fans have access through the TV broadcaster in their respective countries who are also offering live broadband coverage of several show courts, e.g. ESPN in the United States and Eurosport. For
fans without extensive TV coverage of the Australian Open or the desire to watch a different court/match than the TV network is broadcasting this is a terrific new technology for tennis fans. As Wimbledon has done the past couple years for live and archived video, there is a charge for this new broadband offering, i.e. daily fee or tournament “pass.” Australian Open organizers hope to acquire 10,000 subscribers in year one as part of a three year deal with digital sports specialists, Perform, which acquired the digital rights from Tennis Australia and is managing and marketing the broadband offering. Australian Open TV provides Tennis Australia with a new revenue stream while also presenting the Australian Open tennis tournament to a larger global audience through digital channels.
