Big Babe Tennis

If you watched the women’s semis at the 2008 Australian Open, you had a glimpse of what has often been called “big babe tennis.” Tall, talented tennis players such as Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova play very heavy, strong serves and groundstrokes. The points are usually about the “one-two punch” of a strong serve and hard forehand or backhand which instantly put the player in control of what can often
turn into a very short rally. At times, a forcing serve return sometimes off a second serve can be the first hit in the “one-two punch.” Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport also play heavy hitting “big babe tennis.” Even top players such as Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo, whose games are predicated more on the diversity of their shots rather than pure power recognize the importance of their serving and first shots in terms of allowing them to control the baseline rallies which are critical to their success. In the women’s final, notice who serves well and controls the rally from the first shot… she will win!
