
More than thirty years ago, Evonne Goolagong Cawley earned the Number One ranking. However, because of missing paper records, it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that Goolagong was officially recognized by the WTA as one of only 16 women who has earned the top ranking since computer rankings were introduced in 1976. Better late than never as they say... Goolagong was, and still is, a beloved tennis champion and was the childhood idol of many young tennis players a couple decades ago. Goolagong, who played against many top stars including Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Tracy Austin, won two
Wimbledon, one
French Open, and four
Australian Open championships. Goolagong was also
inducted into the
International Tennis Hall of Fame. It's unfortunate that it took so long for Goolagong to add this accolade to her myriad accomplishments, but at least it allows us a chance to revisit her career.
