Five Sets at Five Am...

The exciting, marathon matches on Saturday at the 2008 Australian Open – four matches went five sets, finally ended at almost five am with Lleyton Hewitt's five set win over Marcos Baghdatis. It was an exhausting, as well as exhilarating day for the tennis players, fans, TV commentators. etc. However, it raised the specter yet again of whether men's matches should be three sets or five sets and also whether there should be tie-breakers
in the final set. Many still prefer the five set format, but when Lleyton Hewitt struggles to recover in time for his next potential five set encounter with Novak Djokovic on Monday night he might feel slightly differently. OK, Hewitt, who has such a good record in five set matches may feel differently, but many others might not. A compromise solution might be to play only three sets, but play out the final set rather than potentially ending with a tie-breaker. The matches could still last a few hours, but they'd be unlikely to take five hours...
