RECAP: Tennis Country 2008 Australian Open Predictions
The sun has gone down on the blue tennis courts at MelbournePark for the 2008 Australian Open… Therefore, it’s time to review our pre-tournament prognostications! All in all, we had a pretty good tournament...
Both Serena and Roger did lose before the finals (Serena went down to Jankovic in the quarters and Roger lost to Djokovic in the semis) - it’s hard to say which loss was more surprising…
2 of the 2007 men's quarterfinalists will reach the 2008 semis
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both made the quarters last year and the semis in 2008!
Two lefthanders will reach the quarters
Rafael Nadal and Jarkko Nieminen, both lefties, faced each in the quarterfinals!
Tiantian Sun actually went a couple rounds past the quarters by winning the Mixed Doubles title, but we were really thinking more about the singles, e.g. Na Li who ended up being upset in the third round
No Australian player will reach the quarters in singles
Almost… Lleyton Hewitt and Casey Dellacqua did reach the round of 16
The extreme heat rule will be used two times during the tournament
Well.. it actually was one of the coolest Australian Opens so extreme heat was not a factor…
A woman from Russia and a man from Spain will reach the semis
Russian, Maria Sharapova and Spaniard, Rafael Nadal both reached the semis!
The roof will never be closed because of rain during the tournament
Oops!There were a couple “rainouts” this year…
The women’s winner will wear a dress
Champion, Maria Sharapova, wore a white Nike dress…
The men’s winner will have a two-handed backhand
Champion, Novak Djokovic’s, two-handed backhand was one of the keys to his victory…
