Want an Australian Open Wildcard?

As the 2008 Australian Open gets underway, there are 16 players in both the men’s and women’s singles draws who didn’t qualify because of their rankings or by winning their way through the Australian Open qualifying draw. Instead, these players received official tournament wildcards which sometimes required them to
win matches in an official qualifying tournament for the 2008 Australian Open. The 16 wildcards are distributed as follows:
- Eight discretionary wildcards awarded by Tennis Australia.
- Two for the Australian Open wildcard playoff winners
- Two for the French Tennis Federation
- Two for the United States Tennis Association
- Two for the Asian Championships winners, i.e. 2008 winners Denis Istomin and Iroda Tulyaganova, both of Uzbekistan
