2008 Australian Open champion, Maria Sharapova, mentioned in her speech after the finals that Billie Jean King had sent her a text message Saturday morning which said, “Champions take chances… pressure is a privilege.” These words were so apropos to Maria’s game and life the past year. Sharapova has dealt with a shoulder injury and serving problems, but continued to fight her way through the pressures she faced. Despite
her problems and pain, Sharapova continued to go for her shots and believe that they would eventually start to find their way back inside the lines of the tennis court. Sharapova has always taken chances on the tennis court because her tennis is built around being aggressive. In the Australian Open final, Sharapova also embraced that “pressure is a privilege” and lived up to that challenge. It is a tribute to her courage that she won the 2008 Australian Open title.
