Monica Seles has officially called an end to her professional tennis career almost five years after she played her last match at the 2003 French Open. There’s a sense of sadness to watch Seles walk away, but there’s also a feeling that it must have been time to move on to the next phase of her life. Although Seles achieved a lot in her career, it's easy to believe that Seles could have won so much more if a deranged fan hadn’t attacked her
when she was at the top of the game in 1993 (she missed more than two years) and if injuries hadn’t interrupted her later in her career. Nonetheless, Monica’s powerful double-handed ground-strokes, mental strength and fighting spirit will remain etched in the minds of tennis fans forever. Clearly, Seles will enter the International Tennis Hall of Fame one day and fortunately she plans to remain connected to the sport for the rest of her life. As tough a competitor as Seles was on the court, she was a shy, warm, sweet, caring person off the court and her giggles will be missed! This is hopefully not a goodbye, but rather until we meet again…
