Women: Who will be Number One?

Justine Henin entered 2008 on a long win streak (she hadn't lost since the 2007 Wimbledon semis) and as the clear Number One ranked female tennis player. However, there hasn't been a truly dominant top player, e.g. Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, in women's tennis for many years. With Maria Sharapova's impressive win at the 2008 Australian Open coupled with her strong play at the 2007 year-end Sony Ericsson
Championships, Sharapova, a former Number One ranked player, is definitely a strong contender for the year-end Number One ranking this year. But there are others besides Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova. For example, the Serbian tennis stars, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, have been relatively consistent, play a lot of tournaments (i.e. ranking points!) and are hovering in the top five on the ranking list. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport can definitely contend, if they can stay healthy and find their confident "A games", for one of the remaining Grand Slam titles this year and the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. However, they are unlikely contenders for the year-end Number One ranking this year... well maybe just a small chance!
