Andy Roddick's Turning Point

In Olympic years, the summer tennis tournament calendar between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open becomes very crowded and complicated. This time around, American, Andy Roddick has chosen to skip the Beijing Olympics and try to really focus on winning his second Grand Slam title at the 2008 U.S. Open. There has been much debate regarding Roddick’s decision because all the other top players have said that they will
compete in Beijing and also because Roddick has always been so supportive of Davis Cup and playing for the United States. Roddick feels that switching timezones and the extensive travel, etc. required to compete in the Beijing Olympics are not worth the risk of potentially compromising his chances at another U.S. Open title. The timing of the Beijing Olympics highlights the scheduling challenges that top tennis pros face as they travel the globe for over ten months of the year. For Roddick, who has played in past Olympics, this is clearly a decision which indicates that Andy believes that winning another U.S. Open title is very important at this stage of his career. Time will tell whether this decision was the best one for Roddick.
