March Madness... Tennis Style...

In the United States, the month of March has become synonymous to sports fans with "March Madness" aka the NCAA college basketball tournament. For those who have never experienced the excitement and pressure of big-time college basketball, it's similar to major professional sports championships... and then some! In the tennis world, March is the end of the "first quarter" and a time when the top players gather in two meccas of tennis, i.e. California and Florida. The Pacific Life Open kicks off the excitement in Indian Wells, California with a
combined men's and women's event. At the end of March, the tennis world moves to Key Biscayne, Florida for the Sony Ericsson Open. Both of these mini-slams portend a lot for what the spring and summer Grand Slam season will offer. For all of the top players, there's a lot at stake in the desert near Palm Springs and across the causeway from Miami. Given the rumblings at the top of both men's and women's tennis the past couple months, it will be fascinating to watch how the play unfolds this year. It feels as if more is on the line this time around for the men such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. At the same time, there are many challengers for the top spot in women's tennis this year. The bottom line is that "March Madness" tennis style will shed a fair amount of light on the rest of the season in professional tennis.
